Was that a newly discovered fish, or one that the folks at Microsoft renamed 'betta'?
Never heard of that fish until early to mid 2009.

Rebuild of the big tank. New lighting on the way. More plants needed.

Them are some nice looking fish tanks you have worked on there, Nick!
The fish has been around longer that M$.
After reading the link you supplied, that fish has been here longer than you & I put together. Microsoft just used it because it looks good and it's name as close to 'beta' as it gets. Hopefully they contributed some resources in preserving it's environment, to help keep it here for generations to become to enjoy the beauty of.
You seem to have other interests other than computers, that's really cool.
Seems these days, more is interested in destroying nature than preserving it. Around my neck of the woods, a country drive was just minutes away. Now it's more like 30 minutes, and the larger cities are swallowing up the countryside (to include many of the ponds we used to have to fish in), in between these and the smaller cities, essentially making these suburbs of the big ones. Our state used to be half country, loaded with miles of forests & nature, now much has been destroyed to build new highways.
What really makes that bad, other than destroying the beautiful scenery, is that they can't even keep the roads that's in place maintained, why destroy hundreds of square miles of forests to build more? Back on the 70's, we once had the most scenic highways of the entire US, now we're near the bottom of the list. Potholes everywhere & less scenery.
It's my hope that this same practice isn't everywhere. If it weren't for the protests in recent years, they'd be drilling for oil off of our coastline, killing the fish in the ocean. We can't eat oil, nor is there anything scenic about a huge slick of it in the world's oceans.
Hopefully there'll be some betta fish around for a few more centuries to come. Folks like you helps to make this possible.

I suspect that we're going to be seeing some fish fighting videos soon with Microsoft & Linux in the same tank.
It's been a long time, but my dad was once into fish tanks, and there would be an occasional fight, just not like a cat or dog one. Quick exchanges.
Hopefully they'll co-exist together.

TsVk!, I've often thought of the same thing, I suppose in the course of 10 years it's been discussed & idea shot down. Due to the large membership we have, some of the posts would look like that of the 'My Digital Life' forum at the bottom with the names of all the likes shown. Depending on the viewpoint, that could be good or bad.
Is Nick the only one with fish tanks any longer?

My artistic side is kicking in so I framed it.
Next job get rid of those ugly locks and replace them with front door lock type of set up, Then fix the holes in the wood and re paint all the blue, then varnish the frame. Then some fish.

Sad news.
Microsoft died over night. He was quite happy last night, Put on his usual feed me show, I gave him 2 pellets he ate them and all was well.
This morning when I turned on the tank light he was still in his usual sleeping spot dead. All the water params are fine, The shrimp and snails are fine.
I am devastated, but it looks like he went in his sleep, and did not suffer.
I will be getting another Betta, I also remodelled the tank a bit.
