... if that's your choice for this machine let's do it then (I'll try it by myself, hope there won't be problems while installing it) ... cheers for all your help.

Not my choice just another option that is quite popular with noobs, and I've used it a bit.  A friend/customer of mine has it also, an older gentleman...and he loves it.  cat1092 turned me on to it...I believe he has installed it for some noobs and older folks...or plans to.  I am actually using it right now, LiveUSB with Persistence.

Hello friends, it's been done, couple of problems due to my lack of expertise on creating installation DVDs and another one with the first password I came up with, had to reinstall again, got rid of windows 7 forever and ever (I hope) ... let's see how it goes ... first impression : it works really cool ... and faster that's for sure !!! ... now it's just a matter of getting familiarized with the whole new thing cause I'm curious ... thanks again to everybody.

Now that its installed open terminal and type

sudo ufw enable

This will start your firewall and create a script that will launch it every time you boot the pc.

Terokal, Once you got the distro on there you want, also run this command in the Terminal same as how Nick posted.  If any problems please just ask!  Or just use the built in Updater, although it is supposed to be better to do it from the Terminal on Install.

Also, what did you install?  They are all different, so it will help if we know  so we can help with any questions you might have.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Hi, thanks MintyUser, good luck for you too.

Pcpunk : I installed Ubuntu Mate ... now I have my first problem : what's terminal or how I can find it ? ... ah ok, I've found it "Applications - System Tools" ... LOL ... MATE Terminal ... like the one from DOS on w7 ... Software Updates are configured to show up every time I start the PC, like on a default way ... but now I see that it's updating a lot of things ... somehow I managed to turn on the firewall (that's what I think) while checking "System - Preferences - Firewall Configuration" cause that was my first thought while taking a look at Applications, Places - System (the only 3 "menus" that are shown up on the screen) ... alrite ... I'll type the comands ... thank you all for the tips and help.

Here is a nice little write up on what the terminal is. Basically its how you do most advanced/admin type things in Linux. You interact with alot of the programs via the terminal, you can input certain "words" to make the program act a certain way. - Hopefully that makes sense.

Anyway to open the terminal you can go to the "utility" section of the menu (I believe its the utility, could be system as well). Should be an application in there called "Terminal" click on that and you can enter in the commands that have been suggested above.

*edit re-reading your post you see only a couple menu options... just poke around and you should find the "Terminal" application. Also you can try hitting "Ctl-Alt-T" and seeing if that launches a Terminal window. I know on regular Ubuntu it does but not sure how Ubuntu Mate is set up.

Hello DeimosChaos, "Ctl-Alt-T", I won't never ever forget that keyboard shortcut, so far the first trick I learnt ... :clapping: ... wow, lots of things these commands are doing ... unpacking, installing, setting up etc ... it's being working for quite some time now ... as I'm learning and checking out of curiosity I'll see if those tools and stuff can be send as shortcuts to the desktop and all that ... like I said : a whole new world !!!! ... thanks for the link, it's now a bookmarked page.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

You don't need to run this if you already started the Updates from the updater.

If you want to check to if Firewall "ufw" is active type in Terminal sudo ufw status verbose

The outcome should look like this:

youruser@yourcomputer:~$ sudo ufw status verbose

[sudo] password for youruser:

Status: active

Logging: on (low)

Default: deny (incoming), allow (outgoing)

New profiles: skip

youruser@yourcomputer:~$

I also suggest to install Google Chrome 64bit from here: https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/index.html

Be patient with the install, it takes a while and towards the end it will say "Installed" but really isn't, you will see if you stay and baby sit it.

Install the one that says Debian/Ubuntu or something to that effect.

This is why, here is a little quote from HTG

"Officially, the latest version of Flash on Linux is only available via Chrome — it’s bundled and comes with Chrome itself. You don’t have to do anything special to get it, and updating Chrome automatically updates the Flash plug-in on Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, and even Chrome OS."

Here is the article, don't let it overwhelm you it's just there if you are interested.

Hi pcpunk, no, I just went along with your suggestion ... was so fed up with all new w7 updates that I was just "let's kill this thing" ... a cousin who is a system's engineer told me that it was a cool option for this junk ... indeed told me each one was OK cause he's been all for Linux since ages ago.

Terminal came up with what you posted plus one thing :

[sudo] password for youruser:
Status: active
Logging: on (low)
Default: deny (incoming), allow (outgoing), disabled (routed)
New profiles: skip

youruser@yourcomputer:~$

Thanks for the heads up about chrome.

good on ya mate, wait I'm not an Aussie - but love that saying lol.  Good to see that you have no issue with Graphics!  I will be around a bit tonight if you have any questions.  I have my Mate USB with me if needed.

One suggestion for you, and is what I did when first got into this.  Now that you got Linux up and running and away from that Cracked Windows 7 Install, consider keeping files on a USB for a little while.  Even better, keep them on your Hard-Drive AND to a USB, duplicates, so that you can try other distro's.  Then, if you see that you want something else you will be able to switch easily.  Considering it only takes about 1 1/4 hours to fully install and update linux it is quite easy to change.  Also, we all make mistakes at first, and sometimes get into a mess, that is a good time to make a move if desired.  For the most part though, you will be rock solid with linux, but some like to play with these things and get into a little trouble lol.

NickAu, I'm not regreting the change at all, yeah I know I've lost a lot of programs that I liked a lot, most for my own and family's entertainment like editing or ruining pictures and mixing and remastering my collection of CDs, but it's all about taking the step, as we say around here "there's plenty of water inside the pool man, just JUMP".

Postpunk, I though most of you were from down under LOL ... I'll have patience, well, not that I'm that type of person, but this change can do a lot of good not only for the PCs but for me (I'll install another distro on mine's after posting it's own speecy log) ... right now there are no problems, everything's working fine (and faster) ... files, music, documents, pictures are on an external drive ... while learning more about Linux I'll just listen to music, take it easy, and come here if I find myself between a rock and a hard place ... right now I have plenty of time on my hands.

Cheers.

:thumbup2: No Worries Mate! I'm just looking into Mate a little also as one of my customers has it, so we can learn together.  Trust me, I was lost the first time I worked on his pc lol.  So used to Mint KDE and some other Mint's.  So I need to brush up a little on this popular distro.  I really get a kick out of the older crowd liking linux!
