I copied it, enhanced it so I could make out more of the detail, and the blew it up a little.............................That is one bizarre looking plant.
It looks like bloody, shredded tissue.
I have the enhanced version, if you want to see it.

tg1911 Yay! that thing is asking to be digitally re-arranged - look forward to seeing what you do.

Here you go

Wow! Magic!
Thanks tg1911, this certainly adds a new dimension to that strange 'alien' which grows in a nature reserve at the back of my house. I just liked the dark silhouette patterns of the branches and had some fun angling to take the pics against the sky. I really do appreciate what you have done with patterns, colours and textures here in the new image.

You're welcome, violetrose.
All I did was adjust the shadows, highlights, contrast, saturation, sharpen, and then up it from 500x375 to 600x450.
I use FastStone Image Viewer (the portable version) to do my editing.
Less than 15 seconds worth of work.

Thankyou, tg1911 - editing is part of the whole digital photography process and FastStone Image Viewer is an excellent program.
The original image was 4896x3672 (18 mp) > reduced to 500x375 for web and email transfers. I am surprised that there was enough resolution for you to be able to enlarge to 640x450 without ending up with something more abstract in appearance. Well done!
By the way, the actual plant is a hard woody structure. The red part is where it seems to have split, probably due to old age and recent harsh drought conditions here.

Definitely has an interesting look, to it.
Looks like a festering wound.

Some wildlife is best avoided - Red Bull Ants are big and nasty !

That's one wicked looking set of mandibles!

One big wicked ant! Approximate measurement would have been 3-4cm. Not sure but I guess it was a queen looking for a new nesting site. Actually I was looking for frogs at the time whilst walking around a pond. Late afternoon sun so this was a lucky shot. Frogs spawning.

Nice shot.

Thanks tg1911. Lucky to actually see those frogs in the daytime.
Here are some little tweeties. They are called Silvereyes and migrate over vast distances but dropped in here for a quick splash!
