YES it cost a lot in terms of money. But that's cheap compared to keeping America safe from Chinese spying,

I guess the spy satellites are next, China has 260 taking pictures, collecting radio signals and other data of every country especially the USA, Europe, Australia.

Not to mention Chinese passenger and cargo jets that fly all over the USA and of course they have assets on the ground that could fly a $1000 dollar drone over these areas without too much danger of being caught.

I think you will find that when the US recovers some of the parts it will be just a harmless weather balloon, the reason the Chinese launched it a different thing.

I can guarantee you the Chinese have hyper accurate survey data down to the last millimeter of every strategic target programed into their missiles just like the USA has of China if needed.

I do not believe the balloon was there by accident as those balloons can be controlled you simply go up or down till you find a wind current or jet stream going in the direction you want, its kind of like hot air balloons work.

I believe the Chinese just wanted to Rattle the USA's cage a bit.

I'm only surprised they didn't use a laser, much cheaper per shot.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AN/SEQ-3_Laser_Weapon_System
I'm sure they have the capability to reach high enough now.

PS. Which other country would call a warship "Ponce"?

Here;s the latest on the balloon saga.

Republicans: A few days ago. "Why isn't Biden shooting it down?, it makes America look weak, Biden is incompetent"

Republicans, Today ( time and date of this post) "Why DID Biden shoot it down? it makes America look weak, Biden is incompetent"

The argument i'd expect from a 4 year old.

High-altitude object shot down off Alaska, US says

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-64605447

Although it was heading for the North Pole so away from the US, and they haven't got a clue what it was or who owned it, they shot it down anyway. :o

The object's purpose and origin was unclear, Mr Kirby said.
.
.
It had already flown across Alaska at a speed of 20 to 40mph (64km/h) and was out over the sea travelling towards the North Pole, when it was shot down.
.
.
"We do not know who owns it, whether it's state owned or corporate owned or privately owned," Mr Kirby said.
